Rock of Cashel

clip2_29b.gif (6304 bytes) Rock of Cashel is built on a large ridge. The whole church looks more or less like a fortress and from what history tells us, that was probably what it was. The bishop who built the church had plans to take over as king of England, but those plans didn't work out too well.

An older graveyard is at the location and still today people from Cashel are buried there. But it is not for everyone who lives there. Several years ago they made a decision that not everyone could be buried there, there was not room for everyone. So when they took this decision, people had to put their names on a list if they wanted to be buried there. The people who were born after that date or moved to Cashel had to be content with the new churchyard.

There are a lot of graves from the old ages and the old crosses that you connect with Ireland are everywhere.

And the view from the church is magnificent. Below the ridge there is an old church, it is not used anymore, there is a new church in the town of Cashel.
